Petrotechnics, the global leader in the development of operational and safe systems of work, has successfully completed the implementation of its Integrated Safe System of Work (ISSOW) solution, Sentinel PROTM on Shell Exploration & Production operated UKCS assets.
The completion of the implementation is a significant step towards harmonisation of permit to work in the North Sea, where Petrotechnics has already deployed Sentinel PROTM across 70% of the region.
Petrotechnics has continually supported the industry‘s Step Change in Safety's endeavours in the area of harmonising permit to work and the ISSOW harmonisation business model is based on Sentinel PROTM.
The project, which was completed within nine months, involved deploying Sentinel PROTM to 19 offshore and 5 onshore sites, and training over 3,000 personnel in its use. Petrotechnics provided consultancy services for the design, build and implementation of Sentinel PROTM, in addition to managing and delivering the training programme.
The first implementation took place on 2 December 2003 at the St Fergus gas plant, near Peterhead in north east Scotland, and the Auk platform, 155 miles east south east of Aberdeen, was the site of the final implementation on 22 May 2004.
As a result of the implementation, 10-15% of permit to work related rework and preplanning effort has been removed, thus freeing up time and allowing people to work more efficiently.
Sentinel PROTM pulls together a raft of working practice procedures and diverse legislative documentation into a single integrated system designed to streamline, standardise and control the way work is carried out both offshore and onshore. Key safety features include the standardisation of risk assessment procedures and the ability to provide management with an at a glance conflict and work activity overview.

Shell's decision to adopt the ISSOW harmonisation model has significantly contributed to the industry‘s ability to standardise not just on the business model but also on operational working practices.

In support of Shell‘s implementation of ISSOW in the UKCS, Petrotechnics has joined forces with RGIT Montrose, a division of Petrofac Training Limited to provide Shell EP Europe with a comprehensive portfolio of training courses that will instruct employees in the use of the system.
The 2-year contract is worth £300,000 and is serviced through RGIT Montrose‘s existing Training Management Solution (TMS) with Shell. RGIT Montrose will provide course booking services and facilities, while Petrotechnics will provide the course programme and delivery.
The programme commenced at the beginning of May and over the next two years approximately 1000 personnel will undergo training, predominantly at RGIT Montrose‘s Altens based training facility in Aberdeen.
