Texan Success for Petrotechnics
4 February 2009
Oil services company Petrotechnics has been voted one of the best companies to work for in Texas only a year after opening an office in the US state. The Aberdeen-headquartered company, which specialises in transforming the safety and efficiency of frontline operations in the global energy industry, was given the honour by the Best Companies to Work for in Texas programme as part of a project initiated by business associations all over the US.
Petrotechnics employs 140 staff in the UK and has a team of 40 people based in Houston, Texas, as well as offices in Trinidad and Tobago and Russia. The Texas awards programme recognises the top 100 employers in Texas every year, acknowledging companies benefiting the state’s economy, its workforce and businesses.
Part of the judging process included an evaluation of the company’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. However, 75% of the total evaluation consisted of the employee experience at the organisation. All companies that are involved receive the results of the employee survey, which identifies the strengths and weaknesses of their workplace in light of the comments made by their employees.
Petrotechnics CEO, Phil Murray, said:” It is a significant achievement to be recognised by the local community in such a short space of time. The US is an important market for us and, as a Scottish company; we are delighted to have been recognised by other business associations. This award has cemented our place in the US.”
According to the survey 93% of Petrotechnics employees were very satisfied with the company, with 99% highly satisfied with leadership and training. Susan Springer, involved in the programme as director of Workplace Assessments, from the Best Companies Group, USA, said Petrotechnics had been given excellent feedback by its employees, with one saying in the survey: “This organisation treats its people with a level of respect that is unparalleled in my personal experience. With the respect comes a willingness to go the extra mile.”
Petrotechnics wealth of experience has been acquired during almost 20 years of operating in the challenging and demanding environment of the UK North Sea. Turnover has increased by 60% over a 5-year period, reaching £13.5 million in 2008. Their achievements have been recognised through various awards, and in 2008 the company received the European Business Award for European Growth Strategy of the Year. In addition, the diverse list of awards extends to the Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards; Outstanding HR Manager; Excellence in Safety; Information Technology and Product of the Year.
